Transitioning to Winter Decor

Winter is the season of cozy and what is better than a comfy cozy home to spend those snowy winter days in. While we transition from Christmas decor  to Winter decor in our home, I have a few ideas to share with you. I spent the weekend taking down all my Christmas decor minus a few flocked trees and greenery.

The best thing about decorating your home for Winter is you don’t have to spend a lot money. You can incorporate a lot of your Christmas decor. Here are nine of my favorite ways to decorate for Winter.

Many (but not all) of the links on mymountainretreat.com are affiliate links.  That means I may make a small commission on the sale of an item you purchase through one of these links.  The price of the item is the same for you whether it is an affiliate link or not, and using affiliate links help me to maintain this website.

First, remove all of the red.

This is where I usually start. I remove all of the red decor and add in more neutral tones.  This alone makes the space feel more “wintry” than “Christmas-y”. Use a ton of neutrals, different shades of white or ivory. Using some warm wood tones also makes a space feel cozier. I leave out all of my buffalo check, I think it makes a great backdrop for any season, but especially in the winter.  This buffalo check rug is from Ruggable and it is a washable rug. I am very impressed with this rug and I’m planning on ordering two runners for the hallways!

Winter Trees

I’ve decided that I just can’t part yet with the twinkling lights on the trees. So, I removed all the ornaments from the trees, and will leave them “naked” for a couple of weeks. I did however leave a few pinecones on the trees. At night, I will plug them in for a super cozy view.

Throw Pillows and Cozy Blankets

I always drape a cozy throw over the back of the couch or a comfy chair.  Cable knit throw pillows really make a couch cozy. I have several baskets in the living room and family room filled with cozy throws. If I want to sit on the couch and watch a movie next to the fireplace, I will grab my favorite faux fur blanket.

Use Natural Elements

You can do this very inexpensively by using the same greenery you used for Christmas. I keep my Christmas greenery out all winter long.  I love adding in rustic touches such as pine cones and branches. Deer antlers are also great for adding into centerpieces.  I also like to hang seasonal wreaths on the front door with a winter mat for welcoming guests.

Candlelight

I’m not a fan of lighting scented candles in the summer months, so once fall & winter roll around, I go a little candle crazy. I love the seasonal scents, of pine, cinnamon and especially vanilla. I also use a ton of flameless candles for a more ambient lighting effect. My favorite part is they are on a timer and also come with a remote.

Fireplace, Wood Stove or Portable Fireplace

Where I live in the Northeast, a fireplace or wood stove is a must. If you don’t have a fireplace or wood stove investing in a portable fireplace is a great way to add coziness to a room. Create a cozy reading nook next to the fireplace and I guarantee this will be your favorite spot!

Updating the Bedroom for Winter:

One of my favorite places to be cozy during the winter months is my bedroom. I have invested in a heated mattress pad because when it gets into the single digits, this is a great way to stay warm.  Flannel sheets are also a great way to warm up. A warm comforter and a cable knit or flannel throw at the bottom of the bed is a definite must.

Warming up the Bathroom

In the bathroom, I like to update my mats to a plushier rug.  I also use a towel warmer and always have a pair of comfy slippers by the shower!

Hot Cocoa or Coffee Bar

This is probably my favorite. I always have a hot cocoa/coffee bar decorated for the winter. It really helps warm you up when you come in from shoveling all that snow.  I collect Rae Dunn, so this is a where I have some of my favorite pieces.  I keep the Keurig there at all times with a mug rack and a basket filled with hot cocoa and coffee pods. I have chocolate marshmallow spoons and mini marshmallows in a fun Rae Dunn canister. This is also so fun for kids!

So, as you can see its pretty easy to update from Christmas decor to winter decor. Just changing out a few pieces and going more neutral may be just the added touch you need.

In the next few days I’ll be refreshing my master bedroom for the winter! Until then ….

Warm Winter Wishes,

Christy
